It was at this point that Phra Pimol Dhum, the priestly prince, was called upon to ascend the throne. He proved capable and reigned as King Somdej Phra Chao Song Dhum (1569 - 1590) more popularly known as King Song Dhum.

You will recall that the King's former page Chamuen Sorasakti. He was in fact one of the chief strategists to place King Song Dhum on the throne. It was also significant that Chamuen Sorasakti was the confidant of Chao Phya Phra Klang, Minister and Keeper of The Royal Treasury, and responsible for all foreign trade which was at that time a Royal monopoly. His duties included Customs and Foreign Affairs and dealing with the foreign community in general. Likewise as already mentioned, Chamuen Sorasaki was by the time a close personal friend of Sheikh Ahmad Qomi.

No doubt Sheikh Ahmad Qomi's business acumen and managerial competence as well as his personal traits of diligence, integrity, and honesty were brought to the attention of Chao Phya Phra Klang, who made Sheikh Ahmad Qomi his adviser and gave him authority to develop port administration and create a new system of collecting dues and taxes and that would remedy the deficit and abuses prevailing from the system that exsisted at the time.

Here again he applied himself with utmost effort and due to his achievements; especially in increasing the Royal Coffers, was promoted by King Song Dhum, to the title of Phya Sheikh Ahmad Rajsethi, and Head of the Kromma Tha Office in charge of Customs and Foreign Affairs, the Port and the responsibility for setting disputes between the foreign community other than the Chinese. He was in fact second in command to Chao Phya Phra Klang, Minister and Keeper of the Royal Treasury.

When Chao Phya Phra Klang died, Sheikh Ahmad Qomi succeeded him. The fascinating point is that all Sheikh Ahmad Qomi's succeesors to this office were his descendants and were known as Chao Khun Kromma Tha up to Chao Phya Bhanuwongse Maha Kosa Dhibodi (Tuam), the eighth lineal descendant, in the reign of King Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V) in 1875. Then this feudal office was abolished and replaced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sheikh Ahmad Qomi was
then made Leader of the Muslim Community of Siam, with the title of Chao Phya Sheikh Ahmad Rattana Dhibodi.

His biggest test came, however, unexpectedly from the foreign community. A large group, consisting primarily of Japanese mercenaries, with some other foreigners and several Siamese officials, conspired to overthrow the King. Sheikh Ahmad Qomi, however, got wind of the plot. He swiftly amassed the Muslim community and, with the help of some loyal Siamese troops, nipped in the bud the uprising and completely overpowered the conspirators. The attempted uprising was suppressed and the authority of the King maintained. King Somdej Phra Chao Song Dhum in recognition of this valiant and loyal act, promoted him from Phya Sheikh Ahmad Rajsethi to Chao Phya Sheikh Ahmad Rattana Dhibodi, with the position of Minister of Civil Affairs (North), and Chao Khun Kromma Tha (Minister of the Royal Trasury, Customs and Foreign Affairs.) This was the first time in the history of Siam that a foreigner was raised to such an exalted position.
